Behind the Scenes: How USF Credit Union's Puppets Are Making Financial Wellness More Human

7/23/2026

Earlier this year, USF Credit Union launched one of its most unexpected financial wellness initiatives yet: a cast of handmade sock puppets using jokes, storytelling, and a little green-screen magic to tackle everything from saving money to avoiding scams.

Since the series debuted, we've received plenty of questions:

"Who comes up with these?"

"How do you film them?"

Today, we're pulling back the curtain.

It Takes Three People... and a Lot of Laughing

Every episode is a team effort.  Two USF CU marketing team members operate the puppets.  Our videographer makes sure every joke - and financial tip - lands just right.

What viewers don't see are the outtakes.

Puppets falling over. Hands cramping. Characters accidentally talking over one another. And plenty of laughter between takes.

More Than Just Silly Socks

Behind every episode though is a lesson.

The first episode introduced one of the most powerful ideas in personal finance: saving consistently over time.  Joined by USF Credit Union CFO Travis B., the puppets showed how small deposits, combined with time and compounding, can grow into something much bigger.

Another episode answered one of banking's most common questions: What's the difference between a credit union and a bank? President and CEO Rick Skaggs joined the cast to explain how the credit union model puts members - not shareholders - first, bringing the philosophy of people helping people to life.

When fraud became the focus, cybersecurity expert Jeff Billy stepped onto the puppet set to share practical advice about today's scams, reminding viewers to slow down, verify unexpected requests, and think twice before clicking.

The cast even celebrated International Joke Day with an episode packed with money-themed one-liners proving that financial education doesn't always have to be serious to be meaningful.

Financial Education People Actually Want to Watch

The puppet series reflects a simple belief: financial wellness works best when people are engaged.

Instead of relying only on traditional banking messages, we're using storytelling, humor, memorable characters, and familiar faces from across USF CU to make important financial topics easier to understand—and a little harder to forget.

Whether the topic is saving money, avoiding fraud, understanding credit unions, or preparing for the future, every episode shares the same purpose:

Helping people build stronger financial lives.

More Episodes Are on the Way

The puppets aren't going anywhere.

They're already hard at work preparing their next adventures, bringing more jokes, more financial tips, and probably a few more bloopers that never make it on camera.
