USF CU's History You Can Bank On: How Winter Park Became One of Florida's Most Charming Cities

5/1/2026

As you’ve probably seen, USF Credit Union recently opened our newest branch in Winter Park. But long before it became one of Central Florida's most charming and vibrant communities, Winter Park began as an ambitious vision for something entirely different.

In this latest edition of the History You Can Bank On series where we look at the rich stories behind the communities and people we serve at USF CU, Brandon R. explores the fascinating story behind the city we now proudly call home.

Winter Park was founded in the 1880s by Loring Chase and Oliver Chapman, who envisioned a planned resort community where Northern visitors could escape harsh winters and enjoy Florida's sunshine. Built on approximately 600 acres, the community quickly attracted residents and visitors seeking both beauty and opportunity.

Like much of Florida at the time, Winter Park's early economy was rooted in the citrus industry. But when the devastating freeze of 1894-95 damaged crops throughout the region, the city adapted and charted a new course.

Over time, Winter Park evolved into a center for culture, education, and the arts. The city became home to Rollins College and developed the unique character that continues to attract residents and visitors today.

Known for its brick-lined streets, scenic lakes, thriving arts scene, and historic charm, Winter Park has successfully preserved its rich heritage while embracing the future.

As USF Credit Union continues to grow in Central Florida, we're proud to be part of a community with such a remarkable story.
