This USF CU Scholarship Recipient’s ‘Pay-it-Forward’ Story Will Warm Your Heart

Through our partnership with St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, we’re helping inspiring healthcare professionals like Melissa (pictured) pursue their education, expand their leadership, and continue their incredible work caring for our community.

“I Cried…I was in Shock!”

Last year, Melissa was awarded one of our USF CU nursing scholarships and she’ll tell you - it came as a complete surprise!

“I cried. I didn’t know what to say,” Melissa says. “I overheard people talking and thought, ‘That can’t be me.’ I had applied for other things before and never received anything. Being pulled into the conference room and hearing the news - I was in shock.”

Leadership, Compassion, and Dedication

Melissa, who is a mom of two children, used the scholarship to continue her healthcare journey at St. Joseph's Hospital - and she’s now “paying it forward” and helping others.

“I genuinely enjoy helping patients, making changes in healthcare, and mentoring other nurses,” Melissa says. “I never saw myself as a leader - I kind of fell into it. But I enjoy helping other people, and now I’m proud to guide others.”

USF CU Scholarship: More Than Financial Help

Beyond the financial support, the USF CU scholarship became a platform for Melissa to connect with others and inspire peers.

“The scholarship helped me financially,” she explains. “But it also allowed me to talk to other people about the opportunity-because it really did happen to me.”

Her advice to anyone chasing their dreams is simple: keep going.

“Try - don’t give up,” she says. “Continue to pursue your dreams, even if you’re not sure. I was a mom with a newborn, going back to school, and this scholarship helped me finish my Master’s.”

Impacting Careers, Healthcare, and Community

Through scholarships like Melissa’s, USF CU is helping nurture the next generation of healthcare leaders, strengthening the local healthcare system, and inspiring others to strive for excellence.

“I’m extremely grateful for St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation and USF Credit Union for coming together to give BayCare team members the opportunity to advance their careers, like they’ve done for me,” she says.
