USF CU’s History You Can Bank On: Clearwater, Florida
Our storytelling series History You Can Bank On explores the fascinating stories behind the communities, businesses, and people we serve at USF Credit Union. And today, we’re taking a closer look at one of Pinellas County’s most historic communities: Clearwater.
You might know Clearwater for its beautiful neighborhoods, historic downtown, and world-famous coastline. But the story of this vibrant city goes back generations - when crystal-clear freshwater springs bubbled out along the harbor and a remote outpost stood on a high coastal bluff.
Back in 1841, Clearwater got its start as a remote U.S. Army outpost called Fort Harrison. Built high on a coastal bluff, the fort uniquely served as a restful, healing environment for sick and wounded soldiers who came to recover by the water.
Before it became a city, this land evolved from a sleepy farming village into a lavish Gilded Age resort destination.
Then came the railroad.
Railroad magnate Henry Plant put the area on the map in 1897 by opening the sprawling Belleview Biltmore Hotel. This massive, luxurious Victorian resort quickly drew wealthy northern tourists, celebrities, and industry titans to the region - forever changing the local economy and putting Clearwater's natural beauty in the national spotlight.
What began with pioneer farms, historic forts, railroads, and ambitious hotels eventually became a community with a character all its own.
Today, Clearwater stands as the seat of Pinellas County. It is known globally for its award-winning, white-sand beaches, thriving modern culture, and scenic Beachwalk promenade.
From early pioneers to historic resorts and modern shorelines, Clearwater has continued to evolve while holding onto the heritage that made it special in the first place and USF Credit Union is proud to serve its community.
