If You’re in Florida, Do These 5 Money Things Now - Before a Storm Shows Up

Hurricane season is here, and USF Credit Union is sharing a few simple steps to help you feel more prepared - and a little less stressed - if a storm comes our way.

#1 - Build Your Storm Fund

Storms can bring unexpected expenses, from extra gas and groceries to hotel stays and insurance deductibles. Setting aside even a little each paycheck can help you handle surprises without added stress. Consider opening a savings account specifically for storm season. It doesn’t have to be a lot- just something that gives you a little breathing room when you need it most.

#2 - Keep Banking at Your Fingertips

If the power or internet goes out, you'll want easy access to your accounts.

Before storm season peaks:

  • Download and update the USF CU Mobile App
  • Confirm your phone number and email are current
  • Turn on account alerts
  • Keep portable devices fully charged

#3 - Know What's Covered

Now is a good time to review your insurance policies, understand your deductible, and make sure you know exactly what's covered.

Don't forget to take photos or videos of valuable belongings and save them securely online. If you ever need to file a claim, you'll be glad you did.

#4 - Create Your Grab-and-Go Folder

When a storm is approaching, the last thing you want is to be searching for important paperwork. Take a few minutes now to gather key documents and store them in a waterproof folder or secure digital location.

Include:

  • IDs and insurance cards
  • Bank and credit card information
  • Mortgage or rental documents
  • Emergency contacts
  • Medical and pet records

Having everything in one place can save time and reduce stress if you need to evacuate quickly.

#5 – Save These Important Contacts

Having the right phone numbers handy can make a stressful situation a little easier. Save these contacts now so they're easy to find if you need them.

Pro Tip: Add these phone numbers to your grab-and-go folder, too.
