Happiologist Shares 10 Happiness Secrets - and Why Financial Wellbeing Matters

3/19/2026

Today is International Day of Happiness, and USF Credit Union is celebrating by sharing insights on how to live a happier life - especially when it comes to your finances.

At a recent company gathering at ZooTampa at Lowry Park, one of the world’s few professional Happiologists, Michael Nutter, shared powerful lessons about what truly drives happiness.

His message was simple but profound: happiness isn’t one-size-fits-all. It starts with understanding yourself and intentionally building a life that includes more of what brings you joy, including the way you manage your money.

Here are some of Michael’s most powerful tips for living a happier life.

Start by discovering what actually makes you happy

The biggest mistake people make is assuming happiness looks the same for everyone.

“I try to help people step back and think about their personal life journey,” Nutter says. “Each of us has something within us that’s individual to our happiness.”

The first step is simple: figure out what genuinely brings you joy.

Once you know what makes you happy - do more of it

Sounds obvious, but many people never take the second step.

“The first step is discovering what makes you happy,” Nutter says. “Then ask yourself, how can I do more of that in my life?”

Small adjustments can make a big difference.

Find the environment where you thrive

Some people flourish in collaborative cultures. Others love competition.

Nutter noticed something unique about the culture at USF Credit Union.

“People here can’t wait to help each other and support each other,” he said. “That kind of environment makes a lot of people very happy.”

The key: know which type of environment energizes you.

Surround yourself with people who genuinely care

Authenticity matters more than people realize.

“When you approach people and everything you do with genuine caring - real caring- the rewards that come back to you are so much greater,” Nutter says.

People can feel the difference between real kindness and forced politeness.

Never underestimate the power of financial stability

Money may not buy happiness, but financial stress can certainly steal it.

Financial wellbeing is a staple in our lives,” Nutter explains. “If you don’t have financial stability, that’s a stressor.”

That’s why USF CU plays such an important role- helping people reach goals like buying a car or home.

Sometimes those moments change lives.

Start your day with something positive

Nutter has a simple morning ritual.

“The first thing I do when I get up is start some coffee and read something inspirational,” he says.

Sometimes it’s scripture. Sometimes it’s a motivational message.

The goal is the same: begin the day with positivity.

Get outside and soak up some sunshine

Nature is one of the simplest happiness boosters.

“I believe in getting into the sun for serotonin,” Nutter says.

Even a short walk outside can shift your mood.

If you’re feeling stuck, study happy people

When you’re struggling, look around.

“See people who are happy and ask yourself what they’re doing,” Nutter says.

Sometimes the best inspiration comes from simply observing others.

Give yourself permission to start fresh

Feeling down doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

“Sometimes all you need is a fresh start,” Nutter says.

That could mean meditation, learning a new skill, changing routines—or simply shifting perspective.

Don’t take life too seriously

One of Nutter’s most refreshing pieces of advice?

Lighten up.

“Understand what brings you joy,” he says. “Then focus on it—and don’t take yourself too seriously.”

Sometimes happiness is simply giving yourself permission to enjoy life more.

A Culture of Positivity

During his visit, Nutter spoke with employees across USF Credit Union, from longtime team members to newer hires. When he asked what they loved most about working there, the answers came quickly:

“Culture.” “Positivity.” “You should be very proud of what you’ve created,” Nutter told the team.

The Bottom Line

Happiness isn’t about copying someone else’s life.

It’s about discovering your authentic self and intentionally creating more moments of joy.

And as Nutter reminds us, the journey looks different for everyone - but it always starts with one simple step: understanding what truly makes you happy - and making more room for it in your life.
