Historic Moment Comes to Life: Celebrating the Groundbreaking That Helped Shape USF Credit Union

7/20/2026

To mark the anniversary of breaking ground on our first branch at the University of South Florida campus, we’re taking a trip back through our archives to revisit a defining moment in USF Credit Union history - and bringing it to life in a unique way.

Captured in a vintage photograph from decades ago, this groundbreaking represented more than the start of a new building. It symbolized growth, opportunity and our commitment to serving the USF community for generations to come.

To celebrate this piece of our history, we used today’s technology to reimagine this historic image for a brief moment - creating a bridge between the past and the future while honoring the people and milestones that helped shape who we are today.

USF Credit Union History

As longtime members know, USF Credit Union’s story began in 1959 with just 16 members and $505 stored in a cigar box.

What started as a small university-affiliated credit union built on trust, community and a shared commitment to helping one another has grown into a financial institution serving more than 80,000 members and managing more than $1.4 billion in assets.

Over the years, USF Credit Union has continued to evolve alongside our members. We recently opened our newest branch in Winter Park, and embraced new technology designed to make banking easier and more convenient.

But while much has changed, one thing has remained constant: our purpose.

From a cigar box in Tampa to a statewide presence, our history has always been built on relationships, service and the belief that financial success is something we achieve together.

This vintage moment reminds us where we started - and inspires us as we continue building what comes next.

Because history isn’t just something we look back on.  It’s something we carry forward.
