USF CU Roundtable with Rep. Bilirakis Highlights Opportunities for Credit Unions

USF Credit Union and leaders from several local credit unions recently gathered with Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) for a forward-looking roundtable focused on the future of banking - including the rise of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity opportunities, and the challenge of keeping financial services deeply rooted in community needs.
At the USF CU-hosted luncheon, credit union leaders walked Rep. Bilirakis through the rapidly shifting landscape they navigate daily. They detailed how AI is transforming fraud prevention and member service and how evolving technology is raising both expectations and responsibilities for institutions built on trust.
A representative from The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates and other Tampa-area credit union leaders added firsthand insight into how evolving technologies, including AI-driven tools and rising digital expectations, are forcing credit unions to innovate without losing the human connection that defines the movement.
Rep. Bilirakis, known for his work on innovation, engaged directly with the credit union leaders about what policy can - and should - look like as the financial landscape evolves.
Richard Sellwood, USF CU’s Chief Operating Officer, said the conversation struck at the heart of what local institutions face every day.
“We’re dealing with real-world issues that affect people’s lives- protecting their information, expanding access to safe financial services, and making sure no one is left behind as technology changes,” Sellwood said. “What we appreciated about Congressman Bilirakis’ visit is that it wasn’t just about policy; it was about listening. He understands that when you talk about cybersecurity or consumer protection, you’re really talking about the financial stability of families in our community.”
The event, which was held at the USF CU New Tampa branch on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, reinforced the role credit unions play as both service providers and advocates.
For USF CU, the roundtable reinforced a central truth: embracing innovation, leveraging new technologies like AI, and keeping member needs at the forefront isn’t just part of the mission - it’s how “people helping people” drives real impact.
